The karaoke party organised by UOL for 38 residents from AWWA Senior Community Home* hit many high notes as everyone sang and grooved to the rhythm of classic songs at KINEX on 23 May 2023.
The stars of the day were the seniors themselves, who charmed the audience, including the 22 UOL and SingLand volunteers, with songs in Mandarin, English, Cantonese, Hokkien and Malay. The vibrant atmosphere at Sing My Song Family Karaoke felt like a heartwarming reunion among old friends, with laughter and chatter filling the air.
One of the residents, Mdm Paeyah, expressed her joy at participating in the activities, and shared: “It’s the first time we got to sing karaoke with Malay songs, and the food was very nice!”
Another resident, Mr Char, echoed the sentiment and said: “It was very fun. We were happy to go out and sing with everyone!”
Besides singing, there were pool games, complimentary tries at the claw machine and, lots of delicious refreshments. It was heartening to see the oldest resident, a 94-year-old, enthusiastically playing at the pool table while enjoying the music.
Mr Kwa Bing Seng, UOL Chief Financial Officer, and Ms Sarah Ng, UOL General Manager (Corporate Communications, Investor Relations & Sustainability), gave out prizes to nine deserving talents, who put up a good show and added cheer to the performance. There were also goodie bags for every senior to bring home.
The grand finale songs, “That’s What Friends Are For” and “明天會更好” (Tomorrow Will Be Better), were a heartfelt tribute to the seniors from the volunteers.
First-time volunteer, Jessica Goh, UOL Corporate Secretariat Manager, said she was glad to have this volunteering opportunity, which is a cause close to her heart. She said: “It is fulfilling to see the seniors enjoying themselves and I could entertain them with my love for singing Hokkien songs. I am already looking forward to the next gathering with them!”
Another volunteer, Gavin Goh, UOL Financial Controller, recollected the joyful time he had with the seniors and fellow colleagues. He said: “It was great and satisfying to see the seniors enjoying themselves with the entertainment and food. It was also an eye opener to see my colleagues singing sportingly. I didn’t know we have so many hidden talents in UOL!”
